Your Guide to the Drakensberg and Natal Midlands

Springbok - Northern Cape South Africa

Springbok is the capital of Namaqualand in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. It lies on the main route to Namibia (N7) and is an excellent stop-over en route from Cape Town to Windhoek. The distance from the Atlantic ocean to Springbok is 89 kilometres. The climate is moderate to hot in summer and mild in winter. Annual precipitation averages 500 mm.Springbok is set in a narrow valley bisecting the granite domes of the Klein Koperberge (small copper mountains), Springbok – shortened from Springbokfontein in 1911 – owes its existence to copper mining undertaken in after 1850 and a ready supply of water.

Springbok - Northern Cape South AfricaIn the late 1870's, rich copper deposits at Okiep saw most Springbok residents following their dreams to drought-stricken claims. Many returned. The British fort built on the hillock in the centre of town during the Anglo-Boer War was destroyed by dynamite planted by a commando led by General Jan Smuts. Across the town square, at the famous Springbok Lodge, photographs adorn the walls. A fascinating collection of mineral samples and semiprecious stones are showcased. Easy access, excellent accommodation and a well-developed commercial infrastructure makes Springbok an essential tourist stopover.
