Somerset East - Eastern Cape South Africa

Somerset East is situated in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. A nearby mountain range was proclaimed the eastern boundary of the Cape Colony at the end of the 18th century. As early as 1771 land was allotted on the banks of the Fish River and later part of this land came into possession of Louis Trichardt who became an important leader in the Great Trek. Trichardt successfully cultivated tobacco which prompted Lord Charles Somerset (Governor of the Cape ) to start a farm in the same area in 1815. The farms then began to supply the frontier garrisons fighting the local Xhosa tribes, with meal and oats hay. The modern day Somerset East 's main attractions are the flowers, both wild and cultivated, that spring up during the summer months with a fantastic backdrop of towering cliffs from the Bosberg Mountains.
