Parys lies on the wide and attractive Vaal river in Gauteng province of South Africa, with tree covered islands some of which have been developed into resorts. Parys was named by the town’s German surveyor, who was reminded of the French capital city on the river Seine. He even gave French names to two farms in the area. Parys is now a popular holiday destination offering a selection of hotels and campsites shaded by willow trees, from where people can enjoy the swimming, fishing, bird-watching and boating. The main crops found here are tobacco, maize, groundnuts, sunflower seeds and corn. The region also has extensive cattle and sheep farms.
