Malmesbury is situated in the Swartland
of the Western Cape
South Africa.
The
Swartland (black land) gets its name from the rich black soil which becomes
visible when the vast golden wheat fields are ploughed. Malmesbury
is a small farming town . Originally settlers were encouraged to make their
home here because of a tepid sulphur chloride mineral spring, renowned for curing
rheumatism. It no longer attracts the ailing, perhaps because more pleasant,
hotter springs are found elsewhere in the region.
