Your Guide to the Drakensberg and Natal Midlands

KwaZulu Natal - South Africa

The coast of KwaZulu Natal (KZN) was first sighted by the Portuguese discoverer Vasco da Gama on Christmas Day 1497, during the journey which took him to India. As Christmas is translated in Portuguese as Natal, this gave the original name to the region.

KwaZulu Natal, is one of the smallest provinces in South Africa, it stretches from the southern borders of Swaziland and Mozambique to the Eastern Cape border in the South. Inland is flanked by Kingdom of Lesotho, the Free State and the Gauteng (previously Transvaal) Provinces.

Known for its scenic diversity, KwaZulu Natal is justly proud of its untamed wilderness, broad beaches, lush subtropical vegetation, sugar and banana farms, hills and towns of the Midlands and the soaring peaks of the Drakensberg.

Shopping in KwaZulu Natal

Dozens of shops line West Street, Smith Street and the lanes and arcades connecting them. The beach front and most suburbs have excellent shopping centers which also incorporate restaurants and banking facilities. Those in the know claim that The Pavilion at Westville, is the best shopping centre of all. The Durban African Art Centre, in Guildhall Arcade, features work of the highest standard, including sculptures and beadwork. The profits are used to promote African Art (Tel: +27 (0)31 304-7015). Bargaining is par for the course at the Victoria Street Indian Market, where stall holders sell goods ranging from spices to curios.

Several International airlines fly directly to Durban International Airport, 15km south of the city centre. A coach service operates at regular intervals between the airport and the terminal at the corner of Smith and Aliwal Streets and taxi services are available between the airport and the CBD.
