The abundant water on the property ensures that the vegetation is usually lush and plentiful, an ideal environment for the breeding of these herds on our pristine hills and valleys. Whilst the Elephant are shy and elusive, the antelope are well-used to the proximity of humans and are present in large numbers.

Birders will enthuse about the plentiful array of plumed friends in this wide range of habitats, from Riverine forest to open Savannah, Thorn Scrublands to Dense Thickets.

Viewing our the wildlife can be done on foot, as Wilderness Trail & Hiking experience, by Quadbike, Mountain Bike, with 4x4 vehicles or on Horseback.

River-Rafting and Canoeing:
The mighty Thukela River winds its way through deep gorges and there are rapids aplenty, when the river is full. There are specially trained tour-guides available for these activities, providing that you have booked in advance.

Bird watching:
Birders will delight in the superb range of habitat in this 3600Ha enclave. There are well over 250 species here and the viewing depends on the season, the patience of the birder and the location chosen. The Riverine forests and open scrublands offer a wide array of possibilities. The plentiful water and the lush vegetation ensure a constant presence of the endemic species to this area. Bring your Roberts and your 7x50's!

Horse riding Trails:
English Tack is on offer here at Kusa Kusa -or bring your own is also OK. Guided Trails or self-Guided are both acceptable. We have a number of horses here on the property and can bring in extra for large parties, on request.

Quadbike Trails:
We have a number of Timber Wolf Quads at the Kusa Kusa Lodge, for hire. Or you could bring your own if you prefer. Riders are requested to be proficient and in position of suitable safety equipment - a limited stock is available for hire.

4X4 Rugged trails:
The "roads" at "Kusa Kusa" are not for sissies! Kusa Kusa is determined that this will remain a piece of "Rugged Africa" and the roads and tracks are not suited to normal sedan car use. A 4x4 or high-clearance off-road vehicle is required to access the more remote parts of this portion of the Biosphere, the River Camp and the San art gallery, in particular.

Hiking & Wilderness Trails:
Those visitors and guests wishing to trek or hike on foot are welcome. The lodge can assist with the preparation of packed picnic lunches or we could meet you at a designated picnic spot for refreshments/picnic/ sundowners etc by arrangement. The Elephants are not tame! These are wild animals, so hikers should take care.

Fly-in Safaris:
There are airstrips at nearby Weenen and at Colenso for those wishing to fly in with light aircraft, or Microlight fly-ins can be arranged and catered for and of course helicopter fly-ins are no problem. By arrangement, we can fetch you from either of the above airstrips and transport you to the Lodge or River Camp as you prefer.

Photo-Safaris:
Photographers will find Kusa Kusa a delight. The varying scenery, fauna and flora provide excellent nature-photo opportunities. And remember - A river runs through it!

Access to Kusa Kusa Safari Camp:
The main access road coming in from Colenso is in good condition and can be used, most of the time, by 2wheel-drive vehicles to get to the main Lodge. The rest of the trails and tracks are for the more intrepid traveller, suing a rugged vehicle, suited to the task. This keeps down the numbers and volume of vehicular traffic and ensures that the reserve remains as nearly pristine as we can keep it.

When travelling around this pristine piece of Africa, please do not litter leave only footprints behind!
