Komatipoort in Mpumalanga is one of the consistently hottest places in South Africa with an average summer temperature of around 33°c and a lovely 26.5°c in winter. Komatipoort lies on the western slopes of the Lebombo (meaning ridge) Mountains which form a wall-like border between South Africa and Mozambique .

In 1890 Komatipoort developed from the workers of the railway extension. It soon became an uproarious construction camp with many hangovers from strong liquor and fevers from Malaria. During the Anglo-Boer war a gang of wayward mercenaries and rough riders made it their base and were recruited to fight Boer guerrillas in the bush. The rivers together with the road and railway forced a passage through the high ridge of mountains to reach the important trading coast of Mozambique . Today Komatipoort is mainly a railway and customs centre with local agriculture producing vegetables and subtropical fruits. Accommodation in Komatipoort
