Activities at Hluhluwe River Lodge

The extraordinary range of activities matches the regions incredible diversity. For the duration of your visit Hluhluwe River Lodge will expose you to the best that this area has to offer.

Hluhluwe Game Drive
Hluhluwe Umfolozi Park is Africa's oldest proclaimed reserve and is undoubtedly one of Southern Africa's most beautiful Parks. Famous for saving the White Rhino from extinction, the park is also home to the rest of the Big 5, excellent general game, prolific birdlife and stunning scenery. Guests will explore this natural treasure in the comfort of an open Landrover with our knowledgeable guides. Enjoy sundowners and snacks overlooking the beautiful rolling hills of old Zululand.

Lake St Lucia Boat Cruise
Hluhluwe River Lodge offers guests the unique african safari package tours opportunity of accessing the lake from the lodge. Leaving at sunrise we cruise down the Hluhluwe River and then into the lake where we take a slow cruise along the shoreline of this World Heritage Site wetland. The african safari package tours guest will learn about the origins of the lake and how its five ecosystems contribute to form the largest estuarine ecosystem in Africa.

Dungandlovu Canoe Trail
Sunrise finds guests paddling leisurely along the western shores of False Bay with qualified canoe guides. With the cry of the fish Eagle being the only noisy intruder, this is the best way to absorb the natural beauty of the lake with its indigenous forests and cliff faces that drop down onto the shoreline. En route we go ashore to examine the fossil beds and ancient coral reefs of the Cretaceous era, before leaving the lake to glide silently between the reed lined banks of the Hluhluwe River.

Sandforest Discovery Trail
Guests are driven by Landrovers into the heart of the sandforest of False Bay Park. Here we disembark to explore, on foot, this rare sub tropical forest with its giant trees such as Lebombo Wattle and Strangler Fig. Guides will introduce guests to the complex interactions of soil, rainfall, fire and herbivores that have shaped this ancient forest growing on the dunes of an ancient coastline. This african safari package tours excursion is followed by a drive down to the lakeshore, where the solitude and spectacular views of Hell's Gate peninsula make it the perfect place for sundowners and snacks.

Frogging
At Hluhluwe River Lodge we try and remove the emphasis from the Big 5 by exposing guests to the surrounding wetlands and the ecology of the Lake St Lucia system. One of the best ways of doing this is to take visitors on an after-dinner african safari package tours excursion to look at frogs. Our nightly frog excursion last approx. one and a half hours during which time one of our guides will expose guests to the fascinating world of the amphibians.
