The author Herman Charles Bosman, one of South-Africa's best known short story writers, held the Marico in high esteem. He wrote many wonderful stories full of humour about the Marico and its people. 

Groot-Marico is one of the few remaining places in South-Africa with a manual telephone exchange. Even though the town was automated at the end of November 2000, the farms are still making use of the manual telephone exchange.
