Your Guide to the Drakensberg and Natal Midlands

Gauteng - South Africa

Gauteng, the place of Gold as its called in South Africa. Gauteng is  the economic powerhouse of the Southern African region and home to Africa’s greatest cities. From the vibrant metropolis of Soweto, through dynamic Johannesburg, City of Gold to the tree-lined diplomacy of Pretoria, Gauteng is a cosmopolitan, multicultural mix of people from all walks of life, from all four corners of the world.

Gauteng - Johannesburg Gauteng’s wealth is not in only gold, but in the people. This unique cultural and social legacy is a  multicultural melting pot, evidenced in the many excellent museums, theatres, galleries, cultural precincts and craft markets. Gauteng has a rhythm, movement and style of its own…and it seems Gauteng will just never stop dancing.

  • Gold Reef City  (011) 496 1600
Built around No 14 Shaft of Crown Mines, the City is designed to be an authentic reproduction of Johannesburg at the turn of the Century. This is apparent by the number of fully furnished miners houses, the museum exhibits, and the various gold mining artifacts that one can see everywhere, for example, the fireplace in the Schwartz jewellery store comes from the home of Barney Barnato, and the door of that store is from the home of Solly Joel.

Gold Reef City Tribal Dancers: The team which consists of some 16 professional dancers, men and women is probably the only full time troupe in the Country. They appear twice daily during the week, and three times daily at weekends. In addition to these appearances certain members perform the popular Gum Boot Dance and give a Marimba Show.

Underground visit: Take the Cage to the 5th level at a depth of some 220 meters below the surface, and you will have come down number 14 shaft, which in 1969 held the World Shaft Sinking record, when the sinking team drilled and blasted 77.5 meters through quartzite in 30 days.
