De Hoop Nature Reserve - Western Cape South Africa

The De Hoop Nature Reserve east of Bredasdorp is about 50.000 hectares in size and lies at a particularly attractive stretch of the cape coast with huge sand dunes and quiet, cliff-framed bathing bays. Walking trails at the De Hoop Nature Reserve lead through the fynbos vegetation and around the Vlei.

The visitor centre provides extensive information on the Southern Right Whale, since this coastal region is the mating and breeding ground of this species. At times the sea is virtually boiling with whales. There is a lot of game in the de Hoop Nature Reserve. One can encounter mountain zebras and several antelope species, among them Bontebok, Eland and Kudu.

In the De Hoop Nature reserve a couple of nice and reasonable priced chalets and a few camp-sites are available. They are often fully booked and early booking is advised, especially over the weekends, during school holidays and in the whale season from September to January. There is no restaurant at De Hoop and basically no grocery shopping. One should get provisions at the latest in Bredasdorp on the road to the nature reserve.
