Cobham

Cobham is a haven for hikers, being the perfect setting for hiking in the Drakensberg. Weaving a scenically splendid path through the foothills of the Drakensberg, the trail takes hikers through a rich variety of indigenous flora (mainly forest and grassland), passing through one of the most beautiful parts of southern Africa. Breathtaking views extend far across the mountain peaks and crests. The full distance of some 60 km takes five days and nights, starting near the Sani Pass Hotel (on the Sani Pass) and ending at Bushman's Nek. Shorter options are available.

Cobham, a haven for hikers The main route is indicated by white footprints. Yellow footprints indicate connecting or alterative routes, and blue footprints indicate the route to drinking water or a swimming spot. Overnight accommodation, usually a converted farmhouse, is provided for up to 30 people, with beds and mattresses. Hikers must bring their own bedding, cooking equipment (including portable stoves, if required) and food. There are flush toilets. The Cobham area is rich in animal life, although the birdlife at this high altitude is less prolific. Look out for eland, dassie, porcupine, blue crane, black eagle and jackal buzzard.

Cobham has a rustic campsite with just four toilets and cold-water ablutions. To make campsite reservations, Trout Bek cottage offers comfortable accommodation for nine people.
