Your Guide to the Drakensberg and Natal Midlands

Cheetah farm / Cheetah Project South Africa

The aim of the Emdoneni Cheetah and Serval Project is to care for wild Cheetahs and Serval Cats, which have been orphaned or injured in the wild and are in need of care and rehabilitation. Emdoneni also intends to breed Cheetah where possible and release the offspring back into their natural habitat

To attract local community, including school groups and tourist to the Cheetah Centre for wildlife awareness and educational purposes has become an important point of the Cheetah project.

Make an enquiry with Merl at Amakhulu Central reservation about accommodation at Emdoneni and visiting its Cheetah Projekt She offers a very professional service and at no extra cost to you.

Animals are fed at 4:30pm daily and visitors to the project can experience the feeding and also enjoy an informative talk regarding the animals and the project by a guide.

The Cheetah is the most unique and specialized member of the cat family. The world’s fastest land animal. Reaches speeds of 70 miles per hour. Unlike other cats, the cheetah has a leaner body, longer legs and is referred to as the "greyhound" of cats. It is not an aggressive animal, preferring flight over fight.

Cheetahs are commonly found in sub-Saharan Africa. Their range includes sparse sub-desert, steppe, medium and long-grass plains. Cheetahs  need bushes, tall grass and other large plants to hide from predators.

Though never numerous, cheetahs have become extinct in many areas, largely due to shrinking habitat, loss of prey, disease and a high rate of cub mortality.

The serval is much larger than the domestic cat. It is long legged, the hind legs longer than the front legs. Its neck is long and its head is small, with large, very erect ears. The serval's coat is yellowish-tan, with black spots, bands and stripes. The tail is ringed with black, and the underparts of the body are white or light tan.

Servals are common on the savannahs where there is plenty of water. They seem to prefer areas of bush, tall grass and dry reed beds near streams, but are found in high-altitude moorlands and bamboo thickets.
