Set on the Brittlewood Estate Birches Cottage is a self catering suite for two persons with all the modern comforts that make country living truly delightful. Birches cottage is situated five kilometres from Underberg and is close to amenities: scenic routes for 4x4; mountain bike and off-road bikes; spectacular mountain surroundings; three golf courses; trout fishing; hiking; canoeing; tubing; winter ice climbing; swimming and bird-watching.

Accommodation at Birches Cottage Birches Cottage is a luxury self-catering suite with an open plan kitchen/lounge catering for the discerning traveller. The sleeping arrangement comprises an extra length double bed covered with percale linen and duck down duvet. Dual electric blankets are provided. The cottage also has a cosy fireplace. The bathroom offers a bath and shower and his and hers basins. The cottage has been appointed in opulence and comfort. TV is channelled through a DSTV decoder which has been encripted to show channels 46 thru 49. These are the traditional SATV1, 2, 3 and E-Tv. If you prefer to watch the full range of channels available on DSTV, we recommend you bring along your own DSTV Smart Card. Accommodation at the Willows The Willows is a super-luxury bedsitter, suitable for the overnight traveller. The two adjoining single beds are dressed in sheer percale linen and duck down duvets. Electric blankets are provided. The bathroom offers undertile heating and a bath and shower. TV is channelled through a DSTV decoder which has been encripted to show channels 46 thru 49. These are the traditional SATV1, 2, 3 and E-Tv. If you prefer to watch the full range of channels available on DSTV, we recommend you bring along your own DSTV Smart Card. Both the Birches and the Willows are situated in a private garden with secure parking alongside. They are serviced daily to international standards. The Cottages are available from 14h00 on the day of arrival and must be vacated by 10h00 on the day of departure. If you anticipate arriving late at night, the cottage lights are left on for you and welcoming instructions will await you inside. Please advise us timeously in such an event. The cottages are situated on a six-hectare estate with Umzimkulu river frontage. The river offers the serious trout angler well oxygenated pools and cascades and the white water enthusiast a tube ride to remember. Excellent swimming is available in the river pools. Generally, Underberg days are fine and summer temperatures range between five and thirty degrees Celsius. Winter temperatures are severe and often reach well below zero celsius. It is always advisable to bring warm clothes, a hat and a raincoat as the Underberg weather changes rapidly and several "seasons" can be experienced in a single day. A good sun screen for your skin should be brought and applied during the summer months when the UV-B factor can be dangerous. Directions: From the N3 take the Howick South / Underbred R617 turnoff and drive 110km via Bulwer to Underberg. At the Kwikspar in Main Road, Underbred, turn onto gravel and hold right into Scotston Road. From there drive 4.2km along Scotston Road, across the Umzimkulu river to Birches and Willows Cottages. They are on the right hand side of the road
